Network Access Point (NAP) of the Capital Region

Culpeper, VA
Overview

In early 2007, the Client engaged HITT to begin work on the Network Access Point (NAP) of the Capital Region located in Culpeper, Virginia. On 30 acres of land, located within an easy drive of the nation’s capital yet outside the federally defined nuclear “blast zone,” the master plan called for a total of five independent data centers, each roughly 100,000 sf of built area and including approximately 50,000 sf of rentable raised access floor area.

Each data center is built to the Uptime’s Institute’s Tier III (N+1) redundancy level, and is capable of supporting power and cooling loads of 160 watts per square foot on the raised floor. The secure campus is surrounded by anti-ram fencing and earthen berms to meet Federal security standards. A secure visitor center is manned by armed guards 24/7. A central fuel farm stores and delivers diesel fuel to each data center, and is able to support all data centers for a period of at least seven calendar days. A central shipping and receiving building allows for off-loading and inspections and is set back from the data centers. A SCIF-rated, 65,000-sf administration building includes a campus-wide network operations center (NOC), the campus-wide security operations center (SOC), and a large conferencing center.

HITT has completed four of the data centers, the administration building, full site development and security, the fuel farm and the visitor center. HITT improved the schedule on each building as the team became more familiar with the Client’s product and the design team’s vision. The most aggressive of the buildings was Data Center C, which was delivered fully commissioned in seven months. Each building was constructed through the winter, requiring carefully planned construction sequences that minimized the impact of weather conditions. Early completion of roads and stone stabilization was critically important to maintain the site.
